Decades ago, former sea going officers reconverted as surveyors, used to form a kind of a Club that they wished to remain as close as possible. At the time, it was rather common to see 3 pieces suit bow tie surveyors boarding the ships and pompously introducing themselves as “Captain X, Marine Surveyor”, considering other surveyors, non former sea going staff, as useless.
The younger surveyors, when also introducing themselves as Marine Surveyors were systematically denied the title and were told that, to be a Marine Surveyor, you needed to be a former sea going officer.
To cut short, time has erased this mistake and it is important to understand that a Marine Surveyor, be it a Marine Surveyor in Thailand or elsewhere, is a person who conducts inspections, surveys or examinations of marine vessels to assess, monitor and report on their condition and the products on them, as well as inspects damage caused to both vessels and cargo.
There are different types of Marine Surveyors:
- Government surveyor
- Cargo surveyor
- Classification surveyor
- Hull and Machinery surveyor
- Private surveyor
- Yacht and small craft surveyor
A cargo surveyor, although being a Marine Surveyor, may not be the proper person to carry out a survey on a damaged hull or faulty engine. Just the same, a former Chief Engineer, may not have the knowledge to be a good cargo surveyor to determine the cause of such or such other damage to such or such specific cargo.
